Native species are plants, animals, and other organisms that naturally occur in a particular region and have evolved there over time. They are generally preferred because they are well adapted to local climate, soils, and wildlife, requiring less water, fertilizer, and maintenance than non-native species. Native species also play an important role in supporting biodiversity, providing food and habitat for local pollinators, birds, and other wildlife while helping to maintain healthy, resilient ecosystems. 4+ Native Species Before New Native Plantings Since 2026 ### The first three years are critical for tree survival. Plant Correctly Match species to your soil moisture, height and light requirements Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, not deeper. Keep the root flare level with the soil surface. Backfill with native soil and water deeply to remove air pockets.
