Become a Steward of a Special Place

Our greenspace thrives because of the people who care about it. We are excited to introduce our Adopt-a-Spot Program, an opportunity for conservation-minded residents to take a special interest in a selected area of the greenspace and help us protect and improve it over time.

Adopting a spot does not mean taking responsibility for all the work in that area. Instead, it means becoming a knowledgeable advocate and extra set of eyes for a place you care about.

Whether you enjoy observing nature, identifying plants, organizing volunteers, or simply helping keep an area healthy, there are many ways to contribute.

What Can an Adopt-a-Spot Steward Do?

Stewards may choose activities that match their interests, abilities, and availability, including:

• Identifying invasive plant species
• Helping coordinate invasive plant removal efforts
• Suggesting native plants that would thrive in the area
• Coordinating or assisting with native plantings
• Creating small woody debris piles that provide wildlife habitat
• Alerting the Greenspace Committee to downed trees or other concerns
• Optionally removing trash from streams or other parts of the greenspace

Observation Is Just as Valuable as Action

You do not need to do all of these things—and you are never expected to work alone.

One of the most valuable contributions a steward can make is simply getting to know their adopted area. By visiting regularly, you can:

• Track changes in plant communities
• Record invasive species that may need attention
• Identify and celebrate native plants
• Suggest opportunities for habitat improvement
• Share observations and ideas with the Greenspace Committee

Your knowledge helps guide future conservation projects and priorities.

Be a Conservation Leader

Many stewards enjoy taking a more active role by helping organize volunteer activities in their adopted area. This might include:

• Recruiting neighbors to help with invasive removal
• Assisting with native planting days
• Sharing information about local ecology
• Helping coordinate small stewardship projects

The Greenspace Committee will continue to support conservation efforts throughout the greenspace. Stewards are partners in that work, not sole caretakers.
